Hi Joe,

I’ve made a lot of progress the last few days.

Some fine tuning on the injection pump and I’ve got a runner on my hands! The injectors are new remanufactured units, but I’ve gotten similar advice on getting them all synchronized.

It runs well now, just smokes a bit and is slow to start when cold. I’ve fixed a bunch of little stuff already and this afternoon did some paint correction. This car really is nice!:

That is awesome, great video! Yes it takes much effort to make a black car shining like this: It will be a show stopper on every cruise in! Great that you were able to fix the engine in such a short time!

P.S.: You may know I've got a 1975 Audi 100 LS in L041 black, too. I got to admit that sometimes I whish I had it painted in NATO olive or camouflage grey/brown/green. Saves so much time in cleaning and polishing!

Hi all, small update here

I feel like there is still an issue with the fuel system so I sent the injection pump and injectors off to Giles for a rebuild and refurbishment.

I also revamped the glow plug system for better performance there

Still waiting on the injection pump but started thinking about the body and getting it all sorted out before I take this car to a show in Pennsylvania this spring.

I was able to source a new fender from Audi Tradition and its on the way via a friend in Canada. I really wish they would just ship direct to the USA!

Excited to get this thing back up and running and then send off for the hood and new fender to be painted

P.S.: Funny that you have to order a fender in Germany via CA. I just had to urge to order a hydraulic pressure line for a 2002 Jetta 1.8T AUQ from Rock Auto in the US as VW in Germany were out of stock.

The show is in Carlisle PA - second weekend in May and actually this year Audi is the featured brand

Excellent! we should have a great turnout this year. Audi is the featured brand too.

A couple friends are bringing their old B2's as well so there will be a handful of similar cars. lots of old stuff comes to the show anyway. last year I think there were 11 urQuattros

Started right up and runs great!

I upgraded the wiring to the glow plugs while the pump was away too

The next problem is the brake system is terrible. It all looks new/rebuilt too except for the master so I’ve ordered one and will replace.

I re-bled everything and still it’s not working well. Really odd

Still having tons of braking problems. I have a hard pedal and what seems like a very low level of braking performance.

First thing I did was replace the brake booster and verify the check valve. The new booster holds vacuum with no issues.
I’ve replaced the master cylinder

Played with the brake proportioning valve which I’m about to eliminate once some parts show up.

Replaced the front rotors and pads and it seems better - but still not right.

Ordered all rear parts to replace the drums, shoes etc. cylinders too.

It still feels like it has no booster but having a new booster and one that holds vacuum confuses me greatly. Anyone have any ideas?

I should say also that the car runs REALLY well now with the Giles pump installed. Made a huge difference in engine power

For me it sounds as if there is a vacuum leak on the vacuum feed line between vacuum pump and boster.
Or perhaps the seeling between master cylinder and boster is missing, would have the same effect.
But first of all, you should check the feed line:

Especially the the red marked area should be checked. Any cracks, small port for the small hose missing??

All seals are intact, the vacuum pump is strong, the check valve works.

If I pull that hose out of the booster after I turn off the car there is clearly vacuum stored in the booster

I’m stumped!

Hi,
If it was my car, I'd check right now if the brake booster has any effect at all: Do a test drive w/o the vacuum line connected to the booster, then do a test drive with the line connected. Any difference? If no: The booster is at fault. If still in doubt: Measure the vacuum level, get a vac-meter, get a T-Joint, run a vac line to the meter placed on dash. So you will be able to watch what is going on while you drive.

BTW: Has the car already been on a brake power test stand? I am sure every VW/Audi dealer in the world has got that device, it will tell you how much brake power you actually have got. And on which wheel how much! That might help identify further problems.

Do you have the correct calipers and correct master cylinder installed? There are different versions available with different bore diameters. Most simple calculations in hydraulics: If your master cyl is too big in dia, you will need more foot pressure to reach required fluid pressure.
